Don’t Be Afraid to Hate What God Hates and What His Prophets Hated, Part II

(This is Part VI of The Discipline of Good Hate and Good Hatred series.)

These are all statements of hate that people have made throughout history: I hate pedophiles, rapists, being fat, liars, cheaters …  I hate Muslims, Jews, America, Islam, Blacks …  For those over the age of 18, it’s very likely that we’ve thought or expressed one or more of the foregoing statements, or something very similar, in our lifetime.  This only means that, as humans, we’ve all felt and expressed hate for something and/or for someone at some point in our lives.

Sometimes we’ve felt and/or expressed good, justified or non-prejudiced hate, like the former group of statements above.  Other times it’s bad, unjustified or prejudiced hate that we’ve felt and/or expressed, like the latter group of statements above.  Then, there are statements of hate that can be either good or bad depending on the context.  For example: I hate you, my boss, life, my life, my job, my parents, winter, work, people …

The point, again, is we’ve all felt and/or expressed hate.  We’ve all felt and/or expressed hatred.  Yet many want to ignore or deny the fact that God, too, hates and has hatred and that His prophets also hated and had hatred.  Why?  Because we are afraid or have been made afraid to hate what God hates and has hatred for and for what God’s prophets hated and had hatred for.  This is a fear we must overcome.

Now, in case you’re still unconvinced that God hates and has hatred, or that His prophets hated and had hatred, pick up ANY (English) translation of the Bible and READ IT.  Unless the translators translated wrong or the prophets and messengers who wrote the Bible were all mistaken, in error, confused, and lying; unless they misquoted God and misrepresented themselves, you’ll come across more than enough verses which prove that our loving Father hates, has hatred and so did His prophets and the righteous people of the Bible.

The following are just a few examples of scriptural verses on whom and what God hates and has hatred for.  All emphasis are mine.

Malachi 1:3

And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Romans 9:13

As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

Proverbs 8:13

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the forward mouth, do I hate.

Zechariah 8:17

And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

Proverbs 6:16

Deuteronomy 12:31

You must not worship the Lord your God the way the other nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods every detestable act that the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to their god.

Deuteronomy 16:22

And never set up sacred pillars for worship, for the Lord your God hates them.

Malachi 2:16

“I hate divorce,” says the LORD God of Israel,” and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment,” says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.

Psalm 11:5

The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence [H]is soul hateth.

Isaiah 61:8

For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

The following are just a few examples of scriptural verses on whom and what the prophets and messengers hated and had hatred for.  All emphasis are mine.

Ecclesiastes 3:8

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Psalm 97:10

Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: [H]e preserveth the souls of [H]is saints; [H]e delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

Psalm 139:21

Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate [T]hee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against [T]hee?

Luke 14:26

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

John 12:25

He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Matthew 5:43

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

Matthew 6:24

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Amos 5:15

Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Proverbs 13:5

A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

After reading all of the above verses you should be convinced that there is such a thing as good hate, just as there is such a thing as good stress.  Hopefully these verses will help you to stop being afraid to hate and have hatred for whom and what God hates and has hatred for and for whom and what His prophets hated and had hatred for.

To be continued, God-willing.
