Controlling Your Tongue and Temper

Controlling Your Tongue

  1. 18:20A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
  2. 17:20He … that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
  3. 20:15Wise words are more valuable than much gold and many rubies.
  4. 15:23Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!

  6. 17:20The crooked heart will not prosper; the lying tongue tumbles into trouble.
  7. 10:19Too much talk leads to sin.  Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.
  8. 12:14Wise words bring many benefits, and hard work brings rewards.
  9. 11:9With their words, the godless destroy their friends, but knowledge will rescue the righteous.
  10. 11:12It is foolish to belittle one’s neighbor; a sensible person keeps quiet.
  11. 11:13A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.
  12. 11:17Your kindness will reward you, but your cruelty will destroy you.
  13. 13:3Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.
  14. 15:1A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.
  15. 15:4Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
  16. 15:26The Lord detests evil plans, but [H]e delights in pure words.
  17. 15:28The heart of the godly thinks carefully before speaking; the mouth of the wicked overflows with evil words.
  18. 16:23-24From a wise mind comes wise speech; the words of the wise are persuasive.  Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

  21. 17:14Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so stop before a dispute breaks out.

  23. 18:6-7Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating.  The mouths of fools are their ruin; they trap themselves with their lips.

  8. 25:8-10[D]on’t be in a hurry to go to court.  For what will you do in the end if your neighbor deals you a shameful defeat?  When arguing with your neighbor, don’t betray another person’s secret.  Others may accuse you of gossip, and you will never regain your good reputation.
  9. 25:28A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.
